Vision Boards, Soul Fitness Style

12/30/2020

I'm a big fan of making a Vision Board to start a new year. I find it sets a fresh tone and helps to shake off any residual negativity from the past twelve months.

I made my very first one in 2006, the year I lived in Hawaii.

I'd been collaging as a creative outlet since childhood but hadn't thought to focus the craft in an intentional way around manifesting my desires until the dots were connected for me on a rare cloudy day in Kona, when I accepted an invitation to cut up magazines and glue the findings haphazardly onto a piece of poster board with four other women, only one of whom I knew, and she only vaguely.

This is my board from that year:
Picture
I wanted to find true love, I wanted to share my life with a partner in a home we made beautiful, and I wanted to lead a healthy, peaceful life.

I never saw any of those women again, but many of those visions have, in good time, become realities in my life (note the little white dog near the top!) and I have done a Vision Board every single year since.

Funny how sometimes angels who show up in our lives for just a day can have a positive, lifelong impact.

Over the years, vision boarding has become an anchor for me, despite its abstract, sky's-the-limit inherent nature.

As a highly visual learner, I use my Vision Boards as a touchstone for generating and emphasizing the way I want to feel about the different areas of my life.

So long as I'm in tune with the vibration of my goals, I can trust my action steps to unfold naturally and easily.

I choose to begin every Vision Board session with some woo-woo, to clear the channels of communication between my conscious mind and my higher self.

A tarot reading, a guided meditation or two, some soft, uplifting music in the background. I used to light a candle and burn some incense, but since our overhaul last year to healthier alternatives in our home, I now diffuse essential oils instead.

I spend a brief moment reflecting on where my life is currently at, because while this isn't exactly a reflection exercise, you can't decide where to go if you aren't fully aware of where you already are. Then I ask myself what "ideal" looks like, and it's with those answers in mind that I browse through my pile of magazines, waiting for images and/or phrases to jump out at me, asking to be included.

And because I am a sucker for All Things Organization, I like to use a Feng Shui grid called a Begua Map as an invisible overlay for my Vision Board creation.
Picture
I find the guidance helpful, but it's definitely not necessary. (If you are already a vision boarder, it can be interesting to look back at past boards with this grid in mind, to see if any unexpected correlations appear.

While the point of creating a Vision Board remains consistent, my articulations have varied wildly over the years.

One year, I used a canvas as tall as I am.

One year, I used three smaller boards that I hung on my wall as a collection.

One year, I used fancy paper to frame everything I cut out and arranged it all like a gallery wall.

One year, I made a Vision Mobile that hung from a hook on the ceiling of my home office.

Some years, I collect pictures and phrases throughout the months, tucking them in a file folder labeled "Vision." Other years (most years,) I cut and collect everything the same day or week that I create the collage.

Sometimes, I leave blank spaces on my board to let the Universe have room for magic I haven't imagined yet. Sometimes, I am in no mood for surprises, and pack my board full to the brim.

Some years, I vision board with friends. Some years, I fly solo.

Historically, I plaster my completed board all over my social media, although in recent years I've felt my vision too delicate and sacred to subject it to other people's projected energy, so I have kept them private. For the past couple, I've found a happy medium.

The point is, no matter how you choose to honor your vision, you're doing it right.

All that really matters is you can conjure up the feelings you are aiming for when you see and study your finished product.

As for me, my 2021 Vision is so big, I don't even have a table that fits it all. This year, I chose to use four base panels, which means I had to spread out on the floor to create it.
Picture
This year is less about the literal things I want to do, see, and experience, and more about the way I plan to show up no matter what comes my way.

I said it last year and this year it's extra true: this moment in time, both in my personal life and in history as a whole, is a pendulum swing out of a dark season and into the dazzling light. It's sheer volume of potentiality, and it has me positively buzzing with gleeful anticipation.

All this life, ready to be lived.

It makes me so happy I could scream. Sometimes, I do.

I feel calmer, steadier, and definitely readier for adventure and growth than I have in absolutely ages.

I feel ready to build my business as a true reflection of my gifts, values, and personal mission.

I feel ready to use my voice, my energy, and my resources to make change for my clients and the world at large.

I feel ready to roll in financial abundance.

I feel ready to dance more, love bigger, and forgive relentlessly.

I feel ready to cultivate new friendships and gracefully release the dredges of the leftover stagnant energy.

I feel ready to travel to distant lands and interact with interesting strangers. Soon enough.

I feel ready to stretch myself energetically, physically, spiritually.

I feel ready to create, serve, organize, coach, and flourish.

I feel ready to publish my story, to share some truth, to answer some questions.

I feel ready for a few pleasant surprises.

I feel ready to step right into the sizzling spotlight of my 2021 vision.

All four panels of her.
Picture
These are the closet doors in my office.

What about YOU?

I'd love to hear what YOU'RE ready for in 2021 if you're willing to share.
  • Tell me, have you ever made a Vision Board?
  • If so, what kind of manifestations have you seen come to fruition because of it?
  • If not, are you willing to try one to kick off the new decade?

Remember, nothing changes if nothing changes.

I love you and I will see you soon!

Self-Care September Day 30: Rest and Reflect

What a month!

As Self-Care September draws to a close, my sincere hope is you feel equipped to move forward through the rest of this year (and beyond) with ideas of practices you can turn into habits that help you feel cared for on a daily basis.

You deserve that - to be diligently and consistently cared for by your very own self in simple, loving ways.

And you deserve to rest. In fact, resting is a fundamental cornerstone of being healthy in body, mind and spirit, and something I encourage you to do more often.

Starting today. Today, our final self-care suggestion is to rest and reflect on all the possible tiny adjustments you could make to enhance your overall quality of life.

As you rest, contemplate everything we've talked about this month. Check in with yourself around which self-care tips feel right for you to work with during these last three months of the year.

Remember, small hinges swing big doors.

  • Are you willing to pause more often and breathe in through your nose, down to your belly, exhaling fully and completely?
  • Can you go to bed a little earlier?
  • Are you willing to practice gratitude despite a challenging situation?
  • Are you willing to look for reasons to laugh?
  • Can you make it a point to lovingly reach out to a friend, an acquaintance, or a neighbor each week?
  • Can you donate your time, spare change, or gently-used household items to brighten someone else's day?
  • Can you listen to your favorite music and dance?
  • Are you willing to write yourself a love list or tell yourself "You're gorgeous" when you look in the mirror?
  • Can you keep a glass of water close by?
  • Can you add some more color to your meals?
  • Are you willing to stretch your body?
  • Can you take a break? Take a walk? Visualize an ideal outcome?
  • Can you sweat, visit the seaside, or indulge in a cleansing cry?
  • Are you ready to hit "unfollow" on that one account that just isn't doing your mental health any favors?
  • Can you be mindful of using words that properly articulate what you mean and convey what you want?
  • Are you willing to take the extra step and put stuff back where it belongs?
  • Can you give yourself credit for doing your best?

Just think about it today.

Not all suggestions need to be taken. Not all actions make sense for all lives. This month hasn't been about doing self-care "right," it's been about recognizing how many different ways there are to love, respect, and yes, care for ourselves.

Some of the ideas we talked about this month might feel so easy, like "how have I not tried that before?" and some may feel the opposite, giving you a strong "as if" reaction.

Either way, it's okay. Because you are the boss of you, the captain of your ship, the master of your health, the decider of your fate.

As they say, I'm not here to teach you, I'm here to love you. Love will teach you.

Thanks for following along with this year's Self-Care September!

Self-Care September Day 29: Nurture Your Green Thumb

You may have heard the urban legend that a NASA study concluded having certain types of plants in your living space can purify your air.

While the study, done in the late 1980's, is scientifically valid, the takeaway that putting a peace lily in your bedroom will create more oxygen at night isn't exactly right. (To create these kinds of results, you'd need close to 1,000 plants in a 10x10 room.)

However!

Bringing plants and greenery into your living space can still be considered self-care. Co-exisitng with other living things that you’re caring for can bring you joy, happiness, and a sense of purpose, which affect your mood in positive ways.

I love accessorizing my house with houseplants - I love how they breathe life into a space and the way you can cultivate a loving relationship with them. And if you start small and pay attention, it's much easier to keep them alive than you might think. You can get the hang of learning the plant's language and the beauty they provide is worth the extra effort!

Benefits of Houseplants
  • Boost mood, productivity, concentration, and creativity
  • Reduce stress, fatigue, sore throats, and colds
  • Humidify the air
  • Beautify a space
  • Help to clean indoor air by absorbing toxins
  • Add life to a sterile space, create privacy, and reduce noise levels
  • Therapeutic and cheaper than a therapist

Houseplant Tips
  • Pick a spot for your plant to live, they don’t like to be moved around. In fact, the majority of plants don’t like change, but sometimes they need it to thrive (just like people!)
  • Remember that light is food for a plant. You can read more about why, how much, and what type of light your houseplants need in this article from The Sill.
  • Pick a day to water your houseplants and stick to it. Make sure to water evenly around the soil. I use "Water Wednesday" as my weekly reminder to check if my plants need a drink - some do each week, some can wait for two weeks. ("Thirsty Thursday" is another cutesie way to keep track of your watering day.)
  • Remember plants don’t like their “feet” constantly wet, so water in small amounts, taking care not to overwater. Overwatering can lead to bugs!
  • Related, don’t let your plants sit in water. I like to water mine in my kitchen sink or bathtub so they can drain well. If you choose a planter without a hole on the bottom, be sure to place some small rocks under the dirt so the water doesn’t saturate the roots.
  • Plant in a big enough planter so they have room for the roots to grow. I tend to initially leave mine in the plastic container they came in and just put them in baskets or pots until they need something bigger.
  • Dust your plants and talk to them as you do! You can use a wet rag to clean the leaves, and coconut oil is also great to rub on the big leaves to make them shiny and new, but not if your plant sits in direct sunlight - the oil can burn the leaves if that's the case.
  • Some plants like having their leaves misted, so I use a DIY Plant Spray I made to do exactly that. I also spray the top of the soil with it to deter bugs. In a 16oz spray bottle, I mix 1 cap of On Guard cleaning concentrate, 10 drops peppermint oil, 10 drops wild orange oil, 10 drops Clove oil, and distilled water. Peppermint, wild orange and clove oils are all natural pest deterrents.

Troubleshooting
  • Brown Leaves– When houseplants get brown on their leaves, it’s generally an indication of poor watering habits. The best way to water a houseplant is to thoroughly flush it until water runs freely out the drainage holes. Shallow watering can cause brown tips on the leaves.
  • Yellow Leaves The most common reason that plants’ leaves turn yellow is because of moisture stress, which can be from either over watering or under watering. If you have a plant that has yellow leaves, check the soil in the pot to see if the soil is dry.
  • Gnats Reducing excess moisture is a key to getting rid of gnats in houseplants. Add a thin layer of pebbles or gravel to the top of the potting soil in your indoor plant containers. Clean your catch trays. Insert sticky traps into your houseplants.
  • Common Reasons Houseplants Die include not getting enough light, watering the wrong way, giving too much fertilizer, the air is too dry, or you think it's dead but it's not.

Great Beginner Houseplants
Philodendron
  • This plant has a reputation of being one of the easiest houseplants to grow. It's a perfect plant to hang from high places or place on high shelves because the leaves can trail up to 10 feet!
  • Bright, indirect sunlight
  • Water once a week or even every other - check to see when the top part of the soil is dry.  Don’t let the roots sit in water.
Succulents
  • Bright, full sun is ideal, but medium, filtered light can work, too
  • Water every two weeks for smaller succulents or monthly for larger ones. Do not overwater - you run the risk of them sitting in the water which will cause plant to rot. Better to error on the side of a thirsty succulent than a drowning one.
Snake Plant
  • Often called “Mother in-law Tongue,” this is another reportedly easy peasy plant to care for
  • Low light (this plant has even been rumored to survive in windowless office building!)
  • Low water requirements
Peace Lily
  • One of the most common houseplants because of how easy it is to grow
  • Keep the soil moist, but do not overwater. Peace lilies can tolerate short periods of dry soil, but their leaves will start to brown if neglected for too long.
  • Bright but not direct light
