Saying what we mean and asking for what we want are, at the same time, very important habits to cultivate and skills that are rarely taught in schools, homes, or workplaces. But the mind-readers among us are few and far between so it absolutely behooves us to stretch ourselves in these specific ways. WHY?

Whether we realize it or not, what we spend money on says a lot about our priorities (and our privilege, but that's a different conversation.) We vote with our dollars every single day. And as we've been discovering all month long, the self-care habits and actions you choose to engage in have a profound effect on your overall levels of happiness, health, and well-being. As we've also seen, self-care doesn't have to cost a thing, but today, we're going to let it. Today, the self-care task is reinforce your importance to yourself by choosing a way to invest in you. Life is too short and your mental health is too important to let inconsequential numbers be the boss of you. Did you know? Your weight only measures your gravitational pull, which has nothing to do with your health or worth or capabilities or value. Did you know? The Body Mass Index (BMI) was created by a Belgian mathematician (not a physician) named Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet, who himself said explicitly that it could not and should not be used to indicate the level of fatness in an individual. It is scientifically nonsensical, physiologically incorrect, and likened to mathematical snake oil. (source: National Public Radio) Did you know? Today we're focusing on another tried-and-true self-care suggestion, because the benefits of drinking water are well-known and well-documented. Did you know? Your body as a whole is comprised of approximately 60% water. The functions that depend on these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. Additionally, your muscles alone are made up of around 80% water, and even a slight dip in their hydration can impair their physical performance. Water really is that important. There was no #selfcareseptember tip yesterday, not here on the blog nor anywhere on social media, and today's tip explains why: it's important (imperative, even!) to Take a Break once in a while. Your mental health matters just as much if not more than your physical health, and one way to care for it is to conscientiously step away from social media, phone and computer screens, incessant news updates and/or the daily grind on your own terms, rather than waiting for burn out or overwhelm or illness to force it. |
