Kindness is...

Kindness, according to the quick google search I just did, is a quality that combines friendliness, generosity, and consideration, without expectation of praise or reward.

It’s similar to, but not synonymous with, being nice. Kindness includes boundaries which makes both parties feel good, whereas niceness is more about being agreeable at any cost, which is a breeding ground for resentment.

  • Kindness is offering the benefit of the doubt.
  • Kindness is sending someone an unexpected $5: “you’re doing a great job – coffee is on me!”
  • Kindness is catching the foul ball at a baseball game and immediately turning to give it to the kid with the glove sitting in the row behind you.
  • Kindness is loving yourself fiercely.

Kindness is a lot of wonderful things, and below you'll find 20 additional random acts of kindness below for your consideration. Which one can you implement this week?

May they brighten your day, and maybe even the day of those around you.

Random Acts of Kindness to Try on for Size

  1. Invite the person with a few items at the grocery store go in front of you and your full-to-the-brim cart of food
  2. Hold the elevator for someone clearly in a rush
  3. Hold the door open for someone with their hands full
  4. Hold the door open for someone with their hands empty (kindness doesn't require conditions)
  5. Jump on a Meal Train to ease someone's load, even if you don't know the person or they live far away - sending a $50 gift certificate to Uber Eats or Grub Hub is still helpful
  6. Mow the grass, pull the weeds, rake the leaves, or shovel the snow for a neighbor
  7. Pay for strangers' overdue fees at the library
  8. Praise a colleague in a team meeting
  9. Leave a 100% tip at the restaurant
  10. Act like you just can't figure out which type of candy treat to buy when you're standing in the check-out line, and ask the cashier for their opinion - "I can't decide...what's your favorite?" After you pay for it, hand it to them and say, "It's for you - have a great day!"
  11. Text a friend (or 2 or 5 or 10) "Good Morning!"
  12. Leave quarters next to the washers and dryers at a laundromat
  13. Leave a 5-star review for a deserving customer service experience
  14. Buy lemonade from a neighborhood stand, pay with a $5 or $10, tell them to keep the change
  15. Drink more water - when you're healthy and energetic, it's much easier to be kind
  16. Think globally, act locally: pay bills online, bring a travel mug to your favorite coffee shop, switch to energy-efficient lightbulbs, use cloth diapers, shop with re-useable bags,
  17. Write an unsolicited recommendation or positive review on Linked In.
  18. Take your {dentist, chiropractor, massage therapist, radiologist, whoever} some wildflowers from your garden
  19. Bake bread for your neighbors
  20. Write colorful notes of encouragement and leave them tucked on strangers' car windshields

Kindness is investing in your own well-being, too.
