Self-Care September Day 8: Curate Your Social Media Feeds

Social media is wonderful in a lot of ways and useful for a lot of reasons.

At our convenience, we can stay in touch, get inspiration from creative minds we'd otherwise not have access to, watch our faraway friends' kiddos grow up, laugh together, mourn together, and cultivate friendships that geography might otherwise prohibit.

And part of what makes our social media experience so dynamic is that everyone has the absolute right to use their page as they see fit.

  • If someone wants to post the same five pictures of their impeccably styled and always spotless home, great!
  • If it brings someone joy to post themselves in a bikini while staring thoughtfully out over the ocean over and over, more power to them!
  • If it feels right to someone to consistently rage on their page about the many, many social injustices occurring around the world, then they should absolutely do exactly that!
  • If someone is inclined to focus on sharing what makes them feel blessed in their day to day life, highlighting everything that's wonderful and fun and lovely and amazing, I say go for it!

None of it is wrong. But here's what -

If seeing any of those kinds of things on repeat in your feed causes you to roll your eyes, feel small, cast judgement, or engage in negative self-talk, consider hitting "unfollow," because daily reminders of your insecurities will never be a beneficial exercise for your mental health.

Let's not forget that we have a choice about what we see, what we care about, and what we ignore.

Good news! The flip side of unfollowing the fluff is finding accounts that tap into your desire for "I'm not the only one" feelings of connection, exercises for positive growth, exposure to worldview expansion, and sources of genuine inspiration for your home, garden, or wardrobe. It's all there!

Knowing this will be different for everyone, I'm offering this sample of Instagram accounts that have enriched my life experience in meaningful ways, including but not limited to spirituality, home decor, nutrition, fitness, and mental health.

Self-Care September Day 8: Curate Your Social Media Feeds

Today, double check that the accounts you follow on any/all social media platforms give you all the right feels. Imagine you walk into a room full of everybody behind all the accounts you follow - who are you rushing up to in gratitude and excitement? Who are you ducking behind the potted plant to avoid?

Your social media scrolling should consist of you commenting, liking, sharing, and smiling. The warning signs of those who need to get gone are the one which causes your silences, sneers, sighs, and self-doubt.

Click accordingly.

I love you and I will see you real soon!

xo,
Coach Alex
