Social media is wonderful in a lot of ways and useful for a lot of reasons. At our convenience, we can stay in touch, get inspiration from creative minds we'd otherwise not have access to, watch our faraway friends' kiddos grow up, laugh together, mourn together, and cultivate friendships that geography might otherwise prohibit. And part of what makes our social media experience so dynamic is that everyone has the absolute right to use their page as they see fit.
None of it is wrong. But here's what - If seeing any of those kinds of things on repeat in your feed causes you to roll your eyes, feel small, cast judgement, or engage in negative self-talk, consider hitting "unfollow," because daily reminders of your insecurities will never be a beneficial exercise for your mental health. Let's not forget that we have a choice about what we see, what we care about, and what we ignore. Good news! The flip side of unfollowing the fluff is finding accounts that tap into your desire for "I'm not the only one" feelings of connection, exercises for positive growth, exposure to worldview expansion, and sources of genuine inspiration for your home, garden, or wardrobe. It's all there! Today, double check that the accounts you follow on any/all social media platforms give you all the right feels. Imagine you walk into a room full of everybody behind all the accounts you follow - who are you rushing up to in gratitude and excitement? Who are you ducking behind the potted plant to avoid? Your social media scrolling should consist of you commenting, liking, sharing, and smiling.
